MSI 8800GTS 320 Mb OverClocked Edition - detailed tests + system/video memory usage levels

MSI 8800GTS 320 Mb OverClocked Edition - detailed tests + system/video memory usage levels
Author: Dmitry Sofronov
Date: 13.02.2007

Preface

Yesterday, a release of the "cut down" version of 8800GTS deprived of half of the nominal onboard 640 MB video memory was officially announced. Fortunately, that was the only "abbreviation" of the original 8800GTS. The recommended GPU and video frequencies have not undergone any changes, nor the number of unified pipelines in the VPU core. Today, we are finding out how the reduction of video memory affects the performance in games and will bring in detailed diagrams of video memory usage for each benchmark.

MSI 8800GTS OC 320 Mb

The first video card 8800GTS 320 MB which has been to our test lab is made by MSI and is proudly named as OverClocked Edition. As you must have guessed already, the reason for such renaming is in the increased clock speeds. Instead of the recommended 500 MHz, the GPU speed is 575 MHz, and the frequency of the video memory is 1700 MHz DDR instead of the recommended 1600 MHz. The video cards is packaged in a box standard for MSI produce.

MSI 8800GTS 320 Mb, front side of the box

That we got an overclocked 8800GTS 320 MB is seen from the two labels on the front side of the box – "OC Edition" and "320 MB DDR3", respectively. The remaining specifications, like support for Dual-Link DVI and HDCP, are typical for most of modern products like this.

MSI 8800GTS 320 Mb, reverse side of the box

The reverse side of the box is made in a style typical for MSI. Of the essential, we note the requirements to the power supply unit – at least 400 W of total power output and the capability to provide at least 26 A over the 12 V line.

The package bundle of the video card can't be called rich, but there is everything needed. There is a nice bonus item like the game "Company of Heroes" on two DVDs.

  • DVI/D-Sub adapters - 2 pcs;
  • S-Video/HDTV-out adapter
  • S-Video cable
  • adapter for additional power supply
  • User's manual
  • drivers and utilities CD

MSI 8800GTS 320 Mb, front view

Externally, 8800GTS 320 MB OverClocked Edition looks like any other 8800GTS, except the sticker on the cooler.

The reverse side of the PCB nor makes any difference from its "sisters" but for the color of the textolite which is normally black or green. In our case, it is green.

MSI 8800GTS 320 Mb, front view without a cooler

The view with the cooler removed finally convinces us that it is a reference 8800GTS, which is quite natural. As you can see, there are precisely 10 memory chips as it was on the "original" 8800GTS which had 640 MB of video memory.

video memory on MSI 8800GTS 320 Mb

The secret is simple. The overall memory capacity is assembled of 10 chips in order to preserve the memory bus width 320 bit as before. But the capacity of the memory chips on 8800GTS 320 MB is twice as little. Used are DDR3 chips made by Hynix of 1.1 ns access time, which is equivalent to the nominal frequency 1800 MHz DDR. As we already stated, the recommended frequency is set to 1600 MHz, and engineers at MSI have slightly overclocked their product to 1700 MHz but still reserved some "margin".

As regards the GPU, it has not undergone any changes. The same marking G80-100-K0-A2. All the pipelines are there in place, as they used to be in 8800GTS 640 MB.

Now on to the benchmarking.
